Cinema is the ultimate mirror of society. In 2026, audiences are no longer satisfied with simple reviews; they crave deep-dive analysis that connects their favorite films to historical, psychological, and social realities. April 4 Studios is launching a prestigious new project: the development of ten (10) original video essay concepts. We are seeking a Researcher & Script Developer in Nigeria to join us on this three-month journey. This is a 100% Remote Contract offering a monthly pay of ₦105,000 to ₦120,000, designed for writers who can look at a frame of film and see a world of meaning.
This project is not about “entertainment news.” It is about Cinema as Lens. You will be responsible for identifying unifying themes across groups of films or focusing deeply on single narratives that argue a complete case about the human condition. From Nollywood’s evolution to global arthouse masterpieces, your scripts will serve as the foundation for compelling visual narratives. If you have a degree in Film Studies, Literature, or Theatre Arts and a passion for long-form criticism, this is the perfect platform to showcase your intellectual depth.
Project Overview & Compensation
- Position: Researcher & Script Developer
- Company: April 4 Studios
- Location: Fully Remote (Nigeria)
- Project Scope: 10 Video Essay Scripts & Visual Outlines
- Monthly Salary: ₦105,000 – ₦120,000
- Duration: 3-Month Contract
Key Responsibilities: The Analyst’s Workflow
As the primary researcher, you will navigate the entire pipeline from curation to finalized script outlines:
1. Curation & Evaluation
- Curate Masterpieces: Watch and evaluate films that engage meaningfully with specific social or historical themes.
- Accessibility Check: Ensure all films selected are available via legitimate platforms (Netflix, Amazon Prime, MUBI, or public archives) for production feasibility.
2. Deep-Dive Research
- Contextual Sourcing: Conduct historical and cultural research to ground each essay in academic or critical reality.
- Thesis Development: Identify the core “argument” of each essay. You are not summarizing a plot; you are proving a point.
3. Script & Visual Outlining
- Script Architecture: Draft clear outlines that articulate the structure, thesis, and analytical arc of the essay.
- Visual Mapping: Create visual outlines indicating how specific scenes, motifs, or archival footage will support your arguments.
- Collaboration: Refine concepts in weekly brainstorming sessions with the studio’s production team.
🎓 Requirements: The Creative Scholar
We are looking for a candidate who is both a scholar and a storyteller:
- Educational Background: Preferred degree in Writing, Literature, Film Studies, Theatre Arts, or Cultural Studies.
- Analytical Depth: Proven ability to analyze film form, symbolism, and context rather than just story beats.
- Research Skills: Comfort working with academic and critical sources to build a rigorous argument.
- Video Essay Experience: Familiarity with the video essay format (e.g., Every Frame a Painting, Nerdwriter, Lessons from the Screenplay) is a major plus.
- Disciplined Thinking: Ability to work independently and meet strict 3-month project deadlines.
Video Essays in 2026: The Rise of “High-Brow” Video
In 2026, the “Educational Entertainment” sector is booming. African audiences are increasingly looking for content that validates their culture while critiquing global narratives. April 4 Studios is tapping into this by creating content that travels across borders. A script that analyzes the psychological impact of Nollywood’s “Glamour Girls” or the historical subtext of Ousmane Sembène’s work isn’t just a video—it’s a cultural artifact. This role is a significant addition to any writer’s portfolio, providing proof of high-level research and narrative structure skills.
Method of Application (Strict Guidelines)
April 4 Studios values authenticity and analytical rigor. Please ensure you follow the application steps carefully:
Pro Tip: When choosing a film for your cover letter, consider works by popular directors. Highlighting “Cinematic Form” over “Plot” will earn you extra points!
